Labour has said it will provide a workaround for NHS staff when it re-introduces the lifetime allowance on large pensions – but senior doctors have called for urgent clarity on how this will work

Labour leader Keir Starmer and Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting met with patients and unveiled Labour vision to reduce NHS backlogs by performing two million extra operations, scans, and appointments in the first year. Labour has been warned of an NHS staff “exodus” this summer unless it urgently sets out how its plans to reinstate tax on large pension pots will work.

Labour has said NHS staff will carry out more operations, appointments and diagnostic tests during the evenings and at weekends, and has said this will involve paying staff overtime rates to do extra shifts out of hours.when NHS workers could expect clarity on the new rules, Labour’s shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones, said: “In a couple of weeks, when we publish the manifesto.

Dr Elford said he recently attended a reunion event for his medical school, and several of his peers had talked about the problem, and what options they would take. Dr Goldstone added he had heard of many stories similar to Dr Elford’s, and that changing taxation rules could lead to a “potential stampede” of experienced staff out of the service.
