Labour risks a revolt by MPs in Leave areas after its support for a second referendum, one of their MPs has claimed.
The Labour politician warned they risked being ditched by voters because of what he called an ‘absurd’ shift in policy.He told BBC Radio 4’s Today: ‘Voters won’t have it. The last person to renege on their manifesto was Nick Clegg, it didn’t end very well for him on tuition fees.‘A second referendum doesn’t do that and the voters – in very, very large numbers – will not accept that.
The Labour leader told MPs on Monday he would commit to a second vote to prevent a ‘damaging Tory Brexit.’ Former minister Caroline Flint said that there ‘will never be unity in party’ over the issue and that she would not support a second referendum.Meanwhile Lucy Powell MP said there were 25 Labour politicians who would vote against a second referendum.Labour will this week support a backbench bid to take a no-deal Brexit off the table.
