A quick scroll through the directory of staff at Premier League clubs reveals the distinction between those in charge now. At the end of this season, 11 clubs had a manager and nine had a head coach and with Manchester United keen to switch that could theoretically have been evened up.
Vincent Kompany, Sean Dyche and Rob Edwards are the most important people in the room at Burnley, Everton and Luton respectively. In the head coach corner are bosses used to working in a continental structure, such as Unai Emery, Andoni Iraola and Thomas Frank. De Zerbi has clearly been unhappy at Brighton's approach this season and Pochettino was unhappy at Chelsea recruiting a set-piece coach and clashed over transfer strategy, with a desire to bring in more experience not being met with approval by those above him in the hierarchy.
A head coach has less power than a manager. They have to work in a more collaborative structure and the focus is on coaching players rather than being across recruitment and other key aspects. But it's worth remembering they are still the person tasked with communicating via interviews and press conferences dozens of times a week.
