King Charles III acceded to the throne on September 8, 2022 - following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. However, though Charles is now King, he must still await his official coronation.
The reason for this, is that there must be a period of mourning for the previous monarch and that it also takes an "enormous amount" of preparation, according to Buckingham Palace. The ceremony is an "occasion for pageantry and celebration", but is also a solemn religious ceremony.
This makes the coronation of King Charles rather difficult, should the date of June 3, 2023 go ahead. With such a huge event, a big police presence is required - which means that other largescale events must either be cancelled or postponed. But it is not just the police resources that cause a problem with this date, as Prince William - now next in line to the throne himself - is the president of the FA. As FA president, Prince William would typically attend the cup final, something he would be unable to do if his father's coronation takes place on the same day.
