Sir Keir Starmer has set out his position on the government's tax cuts, saying he would reinstate the top income tax rate of 45% but keep the cutting of the basic rate to 19p

"I've long made the argument that we should reduce the tax burden on working people," he said.

Speaking to Sophy Ridge on Sky News earlier this morning, Ed Miliband, the shadow secretary for climate change, all but confirmed the reversal when he said Labour would be"consistent in our election manifesto with our opposition to the 45p tax cut".

AngelaRayner How many working class people eat plates of lobster at £80 a pop? You can't sell that to the working class any more than the leader of that party.

Raynor said she would not keep the 19p tax .

Average UK wage is £30k = £3500 tax so the taxes of 9.5 'average people' can fund 1 nurse £33k p/a. £1m earnings = £435k tax so the taxes of 1 person funds 13 nurses. His £55k can pay for 1 more nurse isn't the gotcha he thinks it is.

StevePeers 'For anyone earning under £37k increasing the basic rate threshold by 10%, around the current rate of inflation, would offer a greater income tax saving than cutting the rate of income tax from 20% to 19%.' Labour, the party of the squeezed middle in work or on a pension.

I agree but it will be 18 months b4 that could occur. In the meantime the people who gain will make thousands.I would add change had a caveat too it.Keep the 40% as it but add an extra tariff of a further 7% too that rate. Add fines to those that shift monies abroad & remove vote

Ram your green agenda bollocks up yer arse

Look at those two. Not a chance. I think I'd rather have Corbyn and Abbott, just for the comedy value.

Maybe if one of the parties for the people think about single people as well, then maybe their votes will go up. Single people really suffer during this cost of living, zero help or mention from any government since its creation.

Is this really the team Labour has to offer? Awful.

Complete overhaul of the current tax system is needed.

He’s already ordered in the fence to sit on.

His kneeling position?

high business rates and a high wages would make the uk dreadful for businesses. watch them pull out and unemployment rise and investment fall. I would hope they would know this. the fact they dont is another thing that makes labour unelectable.

Andy Burnham Says Keir Starmer Is Wrong To Oppose Proportional RepresentationLabour activists are expected to vote in favour of dumping first past the post at their annual conference. Andy Burnham is right to say Keir Starmer is wrong to oppose proportional representation One of Starmer's greatest failings is his inability to 'read the room' - he just doesn't get it, doesn't understand how attitudes are changing in UK. Sad. Yes, he absolutely is!! It makes sense though, larger parties generally don't like PR as they can come out worse in elections than in FPTP systems. PR only benefits the smaller parties, which is why it's taken so long to even get to this stage.
