“I remain committed to supporting the striking rail workers, and campaigning for a Labour victory at the next General Election, which I will fight for relentlessly from the backbenches.”his decision to join picket lines had not been about defying the leadership, but supporting his constituents.
“I’ve had absolutely no calls from anybody about whether I should be on a picket line today. I’ve always stood for incredibly hard and fought incredibly hard for Keir Starmer to get into No 10. I’ll continue to do that. Whatever his decisions may be because, actually, I’m a Labour loyalist. I want a Labour government,” he said.
“But we’re not going to get a Labour Government unless we are clear that we are standing shoulder to shoulder with ordinary people in Britain who are suffering.” He added: “This isn’t about defying anybody, this is about supporting low-paid workers going on strike taking industrial action in a totally unfair pay dispute that was totally avoidable. This was cooked up by Boris Johnson to distract from his failing premiership.”
