There's definitely a bit of the Steve Kean about Nathan Jones...

Date published: Saturday 11th February 2023 5:40 -Nathan Jones’ job at Southampton is hanging by a thread amid pleas from Saints fans for him to go, but he’s hardly the first manager to cling on to his job. These guys all stuck around longer than they should have…West Ham waited at least half a season too long to sack Grant. By the time they did, in May 2011, they were bottom of the table and bound for the Championship.

The Hammers reportedly approached Martin O’Neill in mid-January to step in with the club bottom of the table, but O’Neill backed off. Rather than look elsewhere, Davids Gold and Sullivan allowed their dead man walking to stumble on to the end of the season. United made what was then their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, thanks in part to a shambolic transfer window. Not entirely Moyes’ fault, that. But spluffing £27million on Marouane Fellaini certainly was. Then there was the one-dimensional football; terrible results against their supposed title rivals; and home defeats to West Brom, Newcastle and Everton.

Three wins in their first 20 Premier League games of 2013-14 left the Hammers languishing in the relegation zone, by which time the fans had tired of Allardyce’s particular brand of football. Four wins in February after Jose Mourinho accused the Irons of playing ’19th-century football’ eased the club’s relegation fears but a parting seemed inevitable come the end of the season.

Allardyce had done a decent job at Blackburn up to the point when it was decided by Rovers’ new owners to dispense with his services. In his place, Venky’s installed Kean, a man with no previous managerial experience but a client of Jerome Anderson, the agent who advised them through their purchase of the club. Nothing to see there…

Of course, Kean would never rock the boat because he knew he had been promoted way above his talents. Not that he would ever admit it. Still, he swerved relegation during his first run-in as a manager, securing survival on the final day.

Arsenal are 'two games' away from 'being Premier League champions' despite 'shocking result' vs EvertonPaul Merson has claimed that Arsenal are just 'two games' away from being Premier League champions despite their 'shocking result' against Everton. “Man City could have subsequently closed in to within just a point of the league leaders having played a game more if they beat Tottenham last Sunday.” 2 points. Was there ever a title challenger that the goalposts were continually moved. I think Gary Neville is having pre event trauma at the thought of us winning it. The scar tissue from the wegner years I can't believe it's really on the surface with him now.
