Coronavirus: Kate Silverton on her fear for children's mental health

To be physically present for our children but not emotionally available - shooing them away while on work calls, sending them downstairs to play while we work upstairs - sends them a very definite message: you're in the way.

Fathers say the pressure of an uncertain future and trying to home-school young children has pushed them to the brink. One dad told me he had never smacked his children but said he had come close during lockdown. "We need to think about how to support parents and teachers, with their own feelings of vulnerability, so they feel equipped to manage what often feels so very unmanageable," Dame Benita Refson, founder and president of children's mental health charity Place2Be, says.

If you can, take some time out for yourself each day, even if it is just for to walk around the block What helps me is to ensure I have had time to connect with my children each day, to create"magic moments" as I call them. Yesterday, it was a game of skipping where my tripping up was the highlight. The day before we baked. The day before that we made playdough and just sat and created"food".

Omg I fell about laughing. You want stressful? How about the 1 million children in WW2 who were all evacuated from the cities for years never seeing their parents once until the war was over. Some were sent to Australia and lost in the system never returned. That's stress.

Diddums the kids of an highly overpaid news caster are at risk hey?...

Oh for goodness sake man up and get on with it. Clearly another overpaid and pampered newsreader.

Indeed 😳😳😳😳

Children are always amazing lovely creatures, moreover, they have caring and loving parents.. heaven with cakes! God bless you all!💙

I think if handled the right way, children will sail through this period unscathed. Children are by far more resilient than adults.

Another reason to raise your kids the best you can. behonest
