Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle turned heads when they attended the Wimbledon final, with fans thrilled to see the Duchess’ enjoying the nail-biting match together after reports of tension. But nobody was more excited to see the sisters-in-law watching than champion Simona Halep, who previously admitted the Duchess of Cambridge was the person she’d most like to see cheering her on.
Halep has previously lost against Williams nine times out of ten, but in the final there was no contest. The Romanian sportswoman beat seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams in two sets, after playing for under an hour. While sheer talent is the clear reason for her win, the star admitted that seeing the Royals gave her that “extra boost” to steal the title.
Immediately after her victory, she told Sue Barker, "It was my best match. And it was an honour to play in front of the Royal Box. I came on court and did my best.” She was then told she’d be given the chance to meet Kate Middleton, to which she replied, “That’s amazing. I didn’t know that," then praising the Royal as "very kind" and "very nice".
Serena also revealed she felt supported by her good friend Meghan, despite admitting her component had played "out of her mind". The star said, “Just having her in general as a friend is great. She’s such a great friend and a great person as well. Always positive, no matter what. It’s so good to have people like that just to know. She’s such a fan of the sport. She too, was happy for Simona. She saw she played unbelievable. That’s just the kind of person she is.
