Junior doctors on the picket line outside St Thomas’ Hospital, London during their continuing dispute over pay. The British Medical Association says it stands ready to talk and that Labour’s shadow health secretary Wes Streeting has promised talks on July 5 if the party wins the General Election., with the general election taking place two days later on 4 July.Junior doctors have said they would call off the strike if Prime Minister Rishi Sunak makes a credible commitment to restore their pay.
The last strike by junior doctors, from 24-28 February this year, led to 91,048 appointments, operations and procedures being postponed.NHS England said the health service would face “major disruption” this week, with the industrial action affecting “most routine care as the NHS prioritises urgent and emergency care, with consultants stepping in to cover for junior doctors, who make up 50% of the medical workforce”.
“As ever, we are working to ensure urgent and emergency care is prioritised for patients, but there is no doubt that it becomes harder each time to bring routine services back on track following strikes, and the cumulative effect for patients, staff and the NHS as a whole is enormous.”Junior doctors have been in an industrial dispute for 20 months over pay and conditions.
Outlining the reasons for the latest strike, the co-chairmen of the BMA junior doctors committee, Dr Robert Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi, said in a statement: “We made clear to the Government that we would strike unless discussions ended in a credible pay offer.” “When we entered mediation with Government this month we did so under the impression that we had a functioning government that would soon be making an offer. Clearly no offer is now forthcoming. Junior doctors are fed up and out of patience.
