As a condition of his plea, he will be required to destroy information that was provided to WikiLeaks

Julian Assange has pleaded guilty to a single felony charge for publishing US military secrets in a deal that secures his freedom after spending five years in a high security British prison.

The deal with prosecutors required him to admit guilt to a single felony count, but will allow him to return to his native Australia without spending any time in an American prison. The 52-year-old WikiLeaks founder arrived at the court in Saipan in a white vehicle, wearing a dark suit with an ochre tie loosened at the collar, alongside his team including Australia’s former prime minister and current ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd.

In 2010, WikiLeaks released hundreds of thousands of classified US military documents on Washington’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq – the largest security breaches of their kind in US military history – along with many diplomatic cables. The trove of more than 700,000 documents included diplomatic cables and battlefield accounts such as a 2007 video of a US Apache helicopter firing at suspected insurgents in Iraq, killing a dozen people, including two Reuters news staff.
