Joyce Carol Oates is distracted. At 82-years-old, the great American novelist has written more than 100 books – testament to a ferocious and much-documented work ethic – but even she cannot tune out the overwhelming chaos of 2020 so far. “Our cultural and political situation is in such turmoil in America,” she muses quietly over the phone from her home in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. “Then, of course, there’s the pandemic. We’re living through a particularly fragmented time.

“Well, I’m lucky to be in my home in a semi-rural area outside of Princeton. I’m able to run a little bit, and ride a bicycle. Much of my day is spent in my office, which looks out onto the garden. A novel is a river with many tributaries – but this house is similar to the McLarens’ house on Old Farm Road. It’s on a creek, and there’s a lake. I’m also surrounded by photographs of my late husband, the photographer Charlie Gross, who died in April last year.

“Yes, it’s funny. After the death of a parent, children – no matter how old they are – kind of revert back to their earlier modes of relating to one another. I thought as I wrote: this is what people are really like in those types of situations. It’s like a comedy – rather than the characters being all tragic and noble. There’s this sibling rivalry among the McLarens, and all of the cattiness between the girls, fighting over Jessalyn’s mink coat.
