Motson became the voice of football during a 55-year broadcasting career.He was an iconic figure in the English game‘Motty’ covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals and more than 2000 matches for television and radio.He was renown for an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game and became instantly recognisable in his famous sheepskin coat.
Born in Lancashire, Motson spent a brief spell playing for Dulwich Hamlet and reporting in the newspaper business before the BBC hired him in 1968.After being given a regular slot on Match of the Day for the 1971/72 season, Motson never looked back.He started out as a newspaper reporter in 1963 He became the BBC’s dominant voice for the next four decades after getting his big break when non-league Hereford knocked Newcastle out of the FA Cup in 1972.
