The pub chain JD Wetherspoon is brushing up its “ethical” credentials by serving up only Fairtrade sugar in all its pubs and hotels in the UK and Ireland.
I refuse to drink beer. Thousands of pickers were treated as slaves in the hop fields of Kent in the last century. I would be so, so disappointed if other Guardian readers didn't felt the same way.
Oh please, not Weatherspoons as well. They can stick their fair trade sugar up their backsides.

Only Fairtrade Sugar? Seems an ambitious marketing strategy but I guess Tim Martin knows what he's doing.
Admittedly, Wetherspoons' success has been an appreciation of and reaction to market trends. Most pubs have never been the place fine dining. For many, its restaurants are a step up from MacDonalds with the same menu wherever you go. Bland, boring, unhealthy.

Used to spend quite a lot of time post-nights in various Spoons. No longer, and no amount of sugar is going to sweeten the deal.
But it's still going to piss on its employees.
