Oh Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Each night after the curtain comes down on this new production of Romeo & Juliet in London 's West End, hundreds of fans gather at the theatre stage door, clutching thy autograph quills under the inconstant moon, lost in the fever of this unbound love, this tender thing, this madman passion that every evening doth bring.

On a bleak stage bereft of furniture or props, Tom wears neither doublet nor hose, but a hoodie and jeans. Sometimes he slips into a white vest, all the better in which to be drenched with blood or show off his muscles. And the audience appreciate it, yea verily. The same thing happens when Juliet wonders aloud wherefore art her boyfriend in the famous second act scene.

To say that Tom Holland is a bit of a heartthrob would be the hunk understatement of the century. Yes, it is true that the 27-year-old from Kingston upon Thames came second to Jeremy Clarkson in a recent poll to find the Sexiest Man in the UK and Ireland, but he is just going to have to live with that.

The Duke of York's Theatre has never seen anything quite like the hype this production of Romeo & Juliet is creatingIn his webby wonderland, Tom tussles with Mysterio instead of Mercutio. Compare and contrast their styles. 'Let's go save the world, Spider-Man,' chirps Mysterio. 'Gentle Romeo, we must have you dance,' cries Mercutio.

Here at the Duke of York's, the top-tier £295 tickets, the cheap seats at £25 and nearly everything in between has long gone, except a few £195 seats sprinkled throughout the 12-week run. In one scene, Tom Holland is even up on the roof of the Duke of York's, four storeys above the Covent Garden pavements, where he delivers Romeo's speech about the flattering truth of sleep, and of his dream that Juliet found him dead and breathed life into him with kisses.
