Covid inquiry must look at whether rules were too tough, says Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg

He is facing calls to quit from some senior Tories, as well as opposition parties, after admitting attending the party.

"We must consider as this goes to an inquiry and we look into what happened with Covid whether all those regulations were proportionate or whether it was too hard on people," he added.announced as the inquiry chair in DecemberThe prime minister's official spokesman said the government had sought to strike the right balance when introducing regulations and guidance.

He added: "I think prime minister has absolutely acknowledged that these restrictions do not...there is no cost-free option, both in allowing the virus to continue unimpeded and indeed introducing restrictions on people's way of lives and their livelihood."The first coronavirus lockdown was introduced in England in late March and rules were slowly relaxed in May 2020, but it was not until 1 June that people were allowed to meet outside in groups of up to six people.

That’s like me doing an enquiry to find out if my shoes were too tight 18 months ago. What’s the point?!?!

Too tough?! We were supposed to all be in the same lockdown boat.

This is an inquiry into the entirety of how Covid affected the UK and the measures and steps taken to see if they worked or if they were too much, as an fyi for the consiracy nuts the actual playbook for pandemics and measures to control it is way worse than what we ever saw.

ReesMogg same contempt here as displayed toward those poor people in Grenfell who he says should have not followed the rules and just used their 'common sense'. Absolutely abhorrent, only out of the mind of an imbecile that tries to play the role of a 3rd RATE REP THEATRE TOFF

BorisJohnson All Covid rule breakers should be set free and not prosecuted.Changing the rules after the event AGAIN?

The Rules were strict, no one should have ignored them. Try being a unpaid carer for a loved one, who could not see friends and family who would normally support carer through bad times. If ordinary people can stick to the rules so should you and your matey's.

WTF?🇳🇿😤

Totally licking the arse of BorisJohnson Whether they were too tough or not, those were the rules at the time and those are the rules that should have been followed. You can’t retrospectively change the rules to accommodate actions that happened in the past.

Ridiculous people, no morals no integrity...just go..

What possible baring has that on the fiasco of Downing Street ?

What a W⚓, implying that Tory MPs use what they condider to be CommonSense even if it's against the law they themselves passed...Tory Logic!

Too late. The people who weren’t allowed family by their bedside are already dead. Politics need a reset, public trust is zero in the people and the system.

There is a spectacular spin, if I've ever seen one!

Poor Bobo; I was too difficult for him to understand !!

What a deeply unpleasant man.

It's awful for those folk who couldn't visit dying relatives during lockdown. Nothing will change what they went through. But think of all the people who will receive a refund on their fines issued by the police for breaking lockdown rules... 💰💰💰

An inquiry must look at whether the rules set by the government were too tough, because the government has been found to have broken the rules they set...

Ress-Mogg seems to be on a renewed 'Offend Offensive'. Let's cause choas in every interview and have something to hide Johnson behind. Sack both of them.... ToryCovidDisaster SackReesMogg JohnsonOutNow

Clearly not if you wanted to pop over to 10 for a “work lunch”. 🍻

The vast majority of the population obeyed those rules, willingly & with great personal sacrifice. The ones who set those rules consistently broke them. What does that tell you about the moral fibre of the British public? What does that tell you about the integrity of its Govt?

Or not tough enough.

Well, I suppose if you have a nanny anything would seem tough!!

Clearly the rules were not too tough because LOTS of people FOLLOWED them. They were hard but those people committed to safety and avoiding covid FOLLOWED THE RULES torymorons

Where did this China story come from. Timing is everything.

Let's check the Tory play book: When in trouble, change the rules. Seems legit. If you change the rule for B🤡ris then you should change the rules for everyone; all those fines and prosecutions should be reversed. Or prosecute B🤡ris and all. Either is fine.

Translated- if they're found to be disproportionate then the PM was absolutely fine to have a large drinks & nibbles party in his own garden - which he knew nothing about, but then thought it was a business meeting & so ended up staying for 'exactly' 25 minutes! Jacob_Rees_Mogg

They were tough. They are tough again as I’m not seeing my father who has end of life dementia and I’m wasting time away from him and BJ jyst thinks it’s fine to do this but gave parties! 😬😬😬😬😬

Thanks for your input Mr. Posh

Jacob_Rees_Mogg I presume youre saying that if the rules were too tough, everyone who was prosecuted for breaches of the rules should now be aquited and appropriately compensated? Maybe the people who set the rules should apologise for the damage that the restrictions caused?

Should read “Rees-Mogg blames rules for Johnson breaking them”

Sure. Let's also investigate if the Earth is flat.

Take this moggggg

Sorry but they were 100s of gusts and mps that attended ,they all need to stand down or be fired

Obviously too tough for the Tories to follow.

How many more deaths would he have liked?

Clearly to tough for Boris and his gang 🙄

Mmm… to tough for whom?
