May – or her successor – will have to rely on cross-party agreement in any further EU talks, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

MPs can vote today to honour both the referendum and common sense. They can vote to leave the EU and stay in the European customs union. That they are faced with much the same range of options as last week is inexcusable. Why could they not get together over the weekend, and agree a soft Brexit compromise?

A Customs Union might be common sense if we’re in the EU. But outside the EU and the Single Market it’s an atrocious deal. 5 minutes looking into the EU-Turkey Customs Union can tell you that. 2 hour queues at the border and no access to the benefits of the EU’s trade deals

Simon Jenkins is wrong, wrong, wrong. It would be a dreadful idea for us to remain in a Customs Union. See: Even arch Remainer, Peter Mandleson, agrees it is a bad idea

Leave won the eu ref 2016 because of people’s concerns about immigration. Cameron tried to get a backing from Eu on immigration,UKIP was full on immigration and vote leave switch from economic to immigration. Staying in CU but leaving Single Market stops Freedom of Movement

If it was 'common sense' that a customs union must prevail, everybody would agree on that. But they don't. 'Common sense' is an illusion.

If you want to stop this chaos expel the ERG group who are acting as a disruptive party within a party They are destroying the Tory party with their right wing European affiliations Mogg et al are killing democracy, voting with May now to beat the EU tax evasion legislation

No, no, no. Revoke A50 or Referendum on REMAIN V any what way silly deal.

So it is better for the UK to operate under EU trading rules without any say as to what these are because of what exactly?

Common sense? You're talking about a Parliament of self serving shysters

Terrible idea. Rich London based journalist calls for the poorest in our society to pay high prices forever.

It seems odd. How the customs union was supposedly one of the main reasons for Brexit, but now it will be taken as a means to achieve Brexit . Priorities seem very confused. Stay or go, but half measures seem out of place

the worst possible outcome. bound to an organization & it's laws with no vote. they want a free trade zone.

Worst of all worlds. What’s the point of leaving then?

Going for the Pointless option is better than the Painful. But why not stay as we are? Or, at least, check it's what the people still want?
