Hands up if you’ve started at least five conversations this week with the question/observation, ‘Ooo, hasn’t it turned cold this week?’ Yes, it has, and we’re thrilled. Why? Because it means finally - finally! - it’s time to crack out the knee-highs for one last spin before spring.
Last year’s Cuban-heeled cowboys are still on the money, but if you do fancy a new pair, there’s a new style sweeping Instagram. Or, rather, an old style. The Sixties and Seventies favourite - the knee-high - has come back with a bang. The street-stylers at this week's Copenhagen Fashion Week have definitely got the knee-high memo, tucking them into their trouser suits and wearing them bare-legged with their blazer dresses.
But what if the idea of baggy trousers and knee-highs is a little, well, piratical for your taste? Or, perhaps you shudder at the thought of showing your knees. Fear not – there are plenty of ways to wear them. Try yours underneath a sweeping midi dress or flared leather culottes so that the only section of boot on show is the toe to the mid-calf. It’s a favourite trick of fashion editors when it’s too cold for bare legs but a little too stuffy for black opaques.
The kicker after all this worry is that, pretty much however you wear them, a knee-high is going to be leg-lengthening. They’ll also be made for walking if you buy them with a low block-heel. Just saying.
