Lynda Hale is one of the first women to have played football for England, but admits players in that ground-breaking Lionesses squad don't feel valued by the FA

The FA declined to comment but insisted the organisation is working through plans to recognise and celebrate all former internationals later this year, and that the 1972 Lionesses will become a key focus area.

To top it off, when the male former England players were celebrated in a similar way at a game soon afterwards “they walked straight on the pitch and were given shields in the middle. I saw it on the telly, I thought ‘hello, someone’s allowed to walk on the pitch’. There’s your discrimination again.”

When the FA ban lifted in 1971, she was picked for trials to become one of the first ever official England players, making her debut at 18. “We got a mention in The Echo,” Hale said. “But it wasn’t until years later I realised what an impact it was.”
