Israel 's missile strikes has killed nine people, Gaza's health ministry claims, as tensions escalate with Hamas firing rockets toward Jerusalem area and hundreds injured in clashes at a sacred mosque site

The missile strike came in response to Hamas firing rockets toward the Jerusalem area and southern Israel.Militants were carrying out a threat to punish Israel for violent confrontations with Palestinians inJerusalem in recent days.The Israeli military issued no immediate comment on the death toll, but was looking into reports three children had been killed, Sky News reports.

Israel's military officials labelled the rocket attacks a "severe assault on Israel" and claimed rocket fire from Palestine had injured one person after a vehicle was struck in the south.Israel's military retaliated by striking at Hamas military targets and sending in more troops to Gaza.
