Israel's ambassador to the UN used a paper shredder to shred the UN charter on stage at the UN General Assembly - ahead of a vote in which the assembly opted to open the door for Palestine to be given full membership.

Within the last few hours, the United Nations General Assembly has backed a bid put forward by Palestine for it to become a full agency member. The vote passed by 143 votes to nine but 25 countries - including the UK - abstained. In a post on X, the UK at the UN explained why it took the decision to abstain. 'We are abstaining on this resolution because we believe that the first step towards achieving this goal is resolving the immediate crisis in Gaza,' it said.

The statement added that the UK remains firmly committed to a two-state solution and recognising a Palestinian state, including in the UN, should be part of the process to achieving a sustainable ceasefire. The US ambassador to the UN Robert Wood gave similar reasons as to why America abstained, saying its vote does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood.
