Hamas has rejected Israel's latest ceasefire proposal, despite reports suggesting talks had been progressing well. Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu says a date has been set for a ground offensive in Rafah - which he has long been warned against.

The Israeli army said its forces shot dead a Palestinian women in the northern West Bank on Monday after she attempted to stab a soldier at a checkpoint.

Many have been shot dead in armed clashes, some while attempting to stab Israeli forces, and others for throwing stones at troops. Turkey, which has denounced Israel for its Gaza offensive and called for an immediate ceasefire, has sent tens of thousands of tonnes of humanitarian aid there since the start of the war.

Israel's top ally, the US, has said invading Rafah would be a mistake and has demanded to see a credible plan to protect civilians.Israel is purchasing 40,000 tents to prepare for the evacuation of Rafah, an Israeli official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media. Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall has been talking to residents of Sderot in northern Israel. One man blames the US pressure for the troop withdrawal.

It also urged that the government"actively and resolutely advocates for the recognition of a Palestinian state" within the internationally recognised 1967 borders. The following year, it was decided Palestine would hold the status of"non-member observer state" - similar to the Vatican's designation - which it has held since. The White House has said it is waiting for a response from Hamas on a hostage release proposal.

Throughout his long political career, Benjamin Netanyahu has believed in getting results through pressure - it's a doctrine that's informed his leadership through this war and the painful rollercoaster of hostage negotiations.
