Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to the US announcement of four hour pauses to allow for humanitarian aid. Elsewhere, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported 'intense violence' at one Gazan hospital.

By Mark Stone, US correspondentFrom my position in in the small Israeli town of Sderot, the Gazan fence is just over a kilometre away. Gaza is so close that you’d clearly hear the call to prayer if the area beyond wasn’t a wasteland. The pancaked buildings are clearly visible on the horizon. It genuinely resembles a hellscape. As the sun set, a series of bangs and then the town’s tannoy announcement comes to take cover. Hamas rockets incoming.

This town is so close to Gaza that the Israeli military’s iron dome defence system, which is designed to shoot the rockets out of the sky, frequently doesn’t have time to react. For all the talk of pauses beyond the tiny humanitarian corridors set up by the Israeli military, neither side is interested. As night fell, explosions, gunfire and then a volley of artillery. White smoke shrouded the area around the Gazan town of Beit Hanoun three miles from my position.
