Is 1080p outdated, or is it still one of the best ways to get a good framerate?

I have resolution anxiety. Not in the New Year's sense of a promise to myself I could not keep, but in the total number of pixels sense. Lately, I've been feeling self conscious about the resolution that I play all PC games at: 1080p. It started a few months ago when the PC Gamer graphics card review I was perusing described the card's strong framerate capabilities at"low resolutions" like 1080p.

Maybe I should've taken the hint earlier. When a 2022 videogame releases its official system requirements, I do assume"Minimum" means 1080p, even though publishers rarely list the exact resolutions listed specs are meant for. In the world of TVs, 4K HDR has been the default for a few years. When I was tasked with updating our roundup of Black Friday monitor deals, I saw 1440p and 4K monitors flying off the digital shelves while 1080p screens went untouched.

Interestingly, 65% at 1080p doesn't totally square with the number of surveyed Steam users theoretically capable of achieving higher resolutions. Of the 10 most popular GPUs tracked , six are older Nvidia 10-series cards best suited for 1080p and four are newer 30-series or 20-series capable of 1440p/4K. There are lots of older cards out there, but lots of newer ones too.

I just started playing it sense it was on sale I really enjoy playing it

Personally I feel 4k is overrated. I have nothing against it, each person should play as they like to but I feel 1080 to be better. If I were to switch to a higher resolution it would be 2k and not higher than that.

Nope. I play all sorts of games and FPS is irrelevant.

It really depends on your budget doesn't it?

I play with 1080p at 244hz so It’s still a struggle sometimes

1080p 75hz on a 27'' Display. I have played 2K and 4K also. Never felt the need to make the jump.

No. It's still the gold standard for regular HD. Though 1440p, I think will soon become the next thing.

I mean I spend most of my time at 1600x900 4:3 since I game mainly on Windows XP. But I think 1080p is still very viable. Nothing is ever outdated.

i think 1440p will be the standard in near future, you can definitely see a huge improvement when going from 1080p to 2k

Me playing at 720p looking at this:

1440p here…

1080p ain't going anywhere. It's definitely a eSports basic.

The FACTS: 1080p for 24' 1440p for 27-32' 4k for 43' and higher. All games look great in medium-high settings. Ultra settings are a waste. 60 fps is enough and great for everything non competiive.

Well, even if i have a 4k monitor and TV, with ray tracing i still play at 1080p (internally) so yeah

What is wrong with you?

I still play games in 1366*768 due to my monitor lol.

I will never go above 1080p, it's the sweet spot. But I remember saying the same thing about 768p. And probably 600p. And 480p.

PC gamer is playing at 768 x 468 still good?

The human eye can't process more than 1M pixels per second so anything over 1000x1000 is wasted anyway /s

Outdated

I recently picked up a 4k 144hz monitor. Obviously can't achieve all of that on some newer AAA titles but surprisingly most games play great at 4k ultra with a 6950xt and r7 3700x. 1080p is still relevant for low to midrange systems.

out dated, if u need it to get a good framerate, you have a dusty ass PC

I'm pretty sure I play games at 720p. 😂

Got myself Crisis Core Reunion for Christmas!

Honestly I never went back to 1080p after 1440p the best of both worlds

I personally moved to 1440p but imo 1080p is still perfectly fine.

Bro you can put 2K, 4K, 8K... that my screens are still 1080p and so are a lot of people's 🤣

1080p still king no cap

1440p 360 hz Goat

I still play some at 720p, honestly.

1080p gone but 1440 is one the best resolution to enjoy everything

1080p 144hz is where I'm at and I have no plans to go above that resolution any time soon. It's perfect for my needs.

If I want to play at higher res. than 1080p, I have to change my GPU. But now GPUs are ludicrously overpriced or scarce whatever the brand.

It will never be really outdated because 1080p on 24' screen is enough of pixel density for games - for most people even 1080p on 27' screen will be enough. Sure 1440p is better and 4k is even better but If you are going for high price/performance ratio you better stay at 1080p.

I have an AMD RX5700XT GPU that's great at getting the most out of games at 1080p, which goes nicely with my 1080p budget monitor. I get to crank all my games up to their highest settings and I get great frames, and that's what's most important to me personally.

You are outdated

If you don’t have an older system or a monitor that can handle higher then yeah it’s a little weird.

I play games at 1080p and watch movies at 1080p.

1080p is good but 1440p is clearly better. The difference to HD on QHD is, I think, clearer than QHD on 4K

1080 120 fps 4k 60 fps

1440p ftw. But I wouldn't cry about 1080. I lived with a sub- 1080p 20' Monitor for years.

I prefer high refresh rate over hi res perfectly happy with 1080p until all games I play go beyond 120 fps then I will think about jumping to 1440p or 4k

I palyed 1080,2K and 4K and the only thing I really want is ultrawide. If I getva better GPU I'll go 2K UW.

1080p isn't low. It's literally the default, The Resolution That The Majority Of Everybody uses. 720 is low. Whether people go to 2K or 4K depends on what monitor they have, and most people won't replace a working monitor as quickly as they would replace a deathly-slow GPU.

I still play 1080p and have no problem with it. 4k is overrated.

1080p is the most well-rounded resolution for the average size of most monitors, and people's setups. it's a nice clean resolution to play at.

Most ppl still playing a expensive gpu on a 2k monitor only.

You play with what you can afford to, if your equipment can only do 1080p then fuck if it’s low, you can still play the game which is all the really matters.

Absolutely not weird lol I can only play at 1080p on pc, don't like higher resolutions.

I still rock 1080p as the default, sometimes I do 1440p using downsampling but yea, more than enough for me.

Better than 720

I think it's still completely fine but there's definitely a huge visual bump once you go to 1440p. A lot of the newer hardware that just came out is built for 1440p and 4k now.

I'm an enthusiast, so 4k is a must for me but to each their own. I was happy with 1080p 120fps for COD multiplayer on PS5 before I moved to PC. Now I have a 4090, most games are 4k, 100+ fps on ultra, and it's glorious 🙌 the beauty of PC is personal preference 👌

1080p is not outdated. Its still the standard for 98% of all games. You have a flawed aspect as to how visuals are perceived. 4K isnt a standard yet, its still only a Goal. Its more about the increased color space than the pixel count.

Its a great resolution, im sure theres a game with enough detail to really benefit from 4k but just about anything looks great on 1080p

I switched to 4K and the difference is amazing the details are crisp. Yes the framerate is 60 for my singleplayer needs thats enough

1440p Gang!

1080p is still in date

1440p is the best one to use. 1080 definitely looks outdated.

Nah 1080s really good for when you need a super high framrate. I play my competitive games like overwatch ony 1080 240hz monitor then any other games like high on life for example on my 4k 144hz. To each their own but I still recommend 1080 over anything lol

1440p is the new standard

1080p, 144hz all the way. Running a 1080Ti. I will most likely just push to a 2k monitor next build.

Meanwhile im playing at 1366

I prefer 1440p 144 Hz. The norm, as perceived by companies and some gamers seems to be 4K 60 Hz. 1080p is a low resolution these days.

I am still on 720p 😂😂😂

1080p is good enough for me, anything above that is just completely unnecessary.

A lot of people in this comment section are thinking that theres only 1080p and 4k…forgetting about the sweet spot of 1440p.

I definitely prefer 1440p on larger monitors but 1080p looks more than fine on most.

I have an 1440p monitor since then havent touch 1080p to me is outdated

Yes

1080p is considered outdated by some? I didn’t know this. I must be a little behind. And I’m in my twenties!

1080p144hz hits the sweet spot for me, I'll probably jump to 1440144hz but maybe next year

Spoiled mfkers, I still play in the 700s on a 15 yr old plasma.

Play at 640p if you have to but please make so it's the default resolution of your display. Nothing looks worse than 1080p in a 4k display. Or 1080p in a 32'dipslay

Me who's still using 800x600 on their shitty Intel HD.

I don’t even have a 4K monitor 😂

There is nothing wrong with 1080p.

It is still more than adequate for gaming. The human eye really can't tell the difference between 1080 and any of the higher resolutions. Those who have the 'better' resolutions tell themselves that they can see difference to justify the extra expense.

1080p is not outdated, no one every said it is

1080pm at 144hz is perfect. I don't need 4k. Just standard HD works fine.

Basically a budget gamer here so I play at 1080p60 on everything and I'm more than fine with it

1080P is great for budget gaming. Its fine.

just bought a 1920x1080 at 240hz, playing battlefield 1 and battlefield 5 locked at 237fps is amazing and im not changing it

I still play 1080 and I won't change even when I'll get a new rig. I don't care about 4k.

I play most games at 1080p on my 4K Tv, I sit far enough back that I cannot see the difference anyway, also means that I don't need to waste money on an over priced GPU

you are a different level of nerd if ur choosing to play without glasses in 2022

1440p is the sweet spot. 1080p is fine, but once you play at higher resolutions it becomes less appealing. 4K is a purely enthusiast realm as a decent card to play games at a decent resolution is still too expensive.

67%+ of steam users say its still overwhelmingly majority that play 1080p

Yes, i still use a 1050ti as well

Yes, but also yes. 🤓👍

1080p looks good and always will.

1080p is good enough

1080p is fine things are clear it’s not as if it’s a fuzzy mess

I don't see myself upgrading from 1080p anytime soon, mostly because I don't need to

It's fine. My eyeballs don't go up to 4k any more anyway.

1080p getting dated but still looks fine. 1440p is where you want to be

I'm still quite satisfied with 1080p, don't really feel like investing in a new monitor right now.

1080p high refresh is fine. However I’d say at the top end 1440p high refresh is the future

1080p at 24” is solid

I only upgraded to 1440p because my 1080p 144Hz monitor only supports high refresh rates over DVI-Dual Link and I wasn't gonna try hunting down a sketchy expensive DisplayPort to DVI-DL adapter to use with my 3070.

1080 is still the standard

1080p 144hz is still completely fine for a great experience and will be good for many years to come. Any resolution higher than this isn't worth the utilisation of resources on your PC

I think 1440p is the sweet spot now for both good clarity and high fps.

Really? Come on... Not everyone owns a GPU strong enough to run games at 4K.

High fps 1080 is far superior to medium/low fps 1440/4k

1080p is technologically outdated but economically it's not. I still don't have any equipment has 2k or 4k resolution.

1080p will never die for gaming.

Idk, I only play 1080p.

1440p is the sweet spot rn

1080p + HDR at 60fps is still the sweet spot to me.

What a dumb thing to put out, anything to get views huh...

1080 is fine. im not upgrading m monitors for basically no reason just for a slightly higher res

1080 is fine. Imagine crying about no 8k and you’re working with a 20 inch screen. Cmon man.

been on 4k since July 2020

Get what you're given on Xbox, have a SX, generally don't see 1080p these days but if it's done right it's still looks good on a 4k screen

There is no need for all that detail. But I come from the world of 8bit so 🤷🏽‍♂️

Your mom is outdated!

4k still has a way to go. I get we have dlss and ffxsr (fsr) but in reality, that just shows gpus still aren't quite powerful enough to run 4k natively. I wouldn't say 1080 is 'outdated'. It's still widely used. I prefer 1440p personally. I don't even bother with 4k.

Some screens and titles is just nice and suitable to play at 1080p 60fps. Of course the higher qualities can be offered and renderable, the better. But I'm mostly well fond of between 1080p and 2k resolution.

“Master race”

What do you mean I play at 720p

No, Just poor like me.

AI upscaling has gotten so good and higher resolution monitors have gotten so much more affordable that there isn't much reason not to upgrade at this point.

I feel, the sweet spot is a decent mid-range card 1440p.

4K/HDR are just way too expensive on PC and aren't worth it. On console they price point is a bit more reasonable, love playing Xbox games in 4K with Dolby Vision and to get the same on PC I'd have to dump a ton of money into a PC build.

No, sure.

Nope. It's alright, bro - me to keepin' the 180 flame.

I'm fine with 1080p, to hold a really good 4k gaming setup you need tons of money with actual prices. Many of the most played games in the world are running good on 1080p or less (competitive games are a bigger slice and some ppl prefer to use smaller res). 4K60 is still luxury.

I just switched to QHD. More than enough for any game at this point of time. 4k in one decade i guess.

1440p is great, 3440x1440p is better

I'm still 1080p

In the age of DLSS and FSR, there is no reason to use it. With DLSS performance mode the internal resolution on a 4K display is 1920x1080. It's also quite possible you'd face a CPU bottleneck at that point.

I only have a 1080p display.

1080p all the way 👍

For ultra 60+ fps with 3060 Ti, 1080p is great

I love being at 1080p. My gpu is 1080p gaming.

4k is way overrated. 1440p + unlimited frames

I do 1440p with my 1070 and get decent frames.

1440p is better and you don’t need to spend a pretty penny to be able to do it

1440p is as low as I’ll go. 😤

1080p MASTER RACE! 60 fps FTW!

Depends on the type of games you play. SP games 1440 p is a sweet spot imho. MP games 1080p is enough

2k is the sweet spot. 4k is still a bit too intensive, and 1080p is too CPU bottlenecky. with a good card and cpu you're going to get the best performance to visual ratio at 2k.

4K can look great, but 1080p looks good. I'm fine with good if it is much cheaper.

As my GTX can runs games I guess it will be 1080p for a while.

I still use 1080p. Even on my 4k TV. 😅 Can't afford to actually get a GPU that can do 4k at 60fps. Nor afford to run it afterwards with energy prices!

I still play my games on a 1080p monitor and I don't have a problem with it.

I'm on 4k now and pretty much prefer 1080p. As long as it's 60fps or higher

30fps is so many degrees of trash, you're almost readable. Almost clicked.

Yes, it is 8K is coming

I'd much prefer 1080p at 60 than 4K at 30, but this is me being on ps5
