The operators of a Nottinghamshire recycling centre have launched an investigation after a resident raised concerns regarding data protection. The man, who has not revealed his identity, explained how he took an iPad to the West Bridgford Recycling Centre and later received a call from someone who bought his device.
The new owner told the man his personal data was still on the iPad. He said: "I was under the impression that when you take electrical items to a council run recycling centre they are disposed of in the correct manner. "The items seem to be sold for profit by members of staff. The iPad I took there was purchased from an eBay seller with all my personal information on and the new owner contacted me to say I must ensure I wipe my personal data off iPads in the future."The recycling centre is run by Veolia, Nottinghamshire County Council's waste contractor.
"Our sites are not secure destruction sites and we publicise at all our recycling centres that it is the responsibility of the owner to remove any personal data from an electrical device before disposal. We have launched an investigation and re-briefed all team members to ensure that materials brought to our sites are properly treated."
