Everton captain Megan Finnigan is hoping that a bumper Goodison Park crowd for this Sunday’s Women’s Super League Merseyside Derby will create “an intimidating environment for Liverpool.”
On February 17 this year, Arsenal set a new record attendance for a Women’s Super League game when 60,160 watched their 3-1 win over Manchester United and with opportunities for fans to get to Goodison fast running out, Finnigan would love to turn out in front of something approaching a capacity crowd at ‘The Grand Old Lady’.
“You see when the men play there how hostile an environment it can be when everyone in the crowd is on it. I’m not saying it’s going to be as hostile as it is for a men’s game but hopefully it will be an intimidating environment for Liverpool.” “There can be no complacency from us and we have to turn up and perform in the way that we did at Anfield.”
Ninth-placed Everton go into this game on the back of three successive defeats and with half as many points as fifth-placed Liverpool, but Finnigan acknowledges that the Merseyside Derby is a fixture like no other. She said: “It feels different. For me personally leading up to it, my nerves are always more prominent for these games.
“Hopefully this time we can attract similar numbers but get the three points. It would mean even more because it’s been a turbulent season for Evertonians so we’d like to give them something to smile about.
