The beloved home of the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Clarence House is one of the smaller regal residences and something of a hidden gem.
“It’s a lovely little walled urban sanctuary,” says royal gardening author George Plumptre. “The gardens are quite shady because there are enormous plane trees running along them, but what makes it nice is that it stretches from the front of Clarence House along the front of the adjacent St James’s Palace.”
Although the house is currently closed to visitors, past tours have included access to five opulent ground floor rooms, where official engagements regularly take place. The Garden Room – a large, sun-dappled space ideal for entertaining large groups of guests – was created from the two rooms in which Princess Margaret lived before she married in 1960.
Lavishly decorated , the interiors boast a fascinating collection of artworks, many acquired by the Queen Mother herself, including works by legendary British painters such as John Piper, Walter Sickert and Augustus John. When the future King Charles moved into the property in 2002, they could not have fallen into better hands. Not only did he introduce organic methods to cultivating the garden – including the compact kitchen garden, which provides produce to this day – he set about creating a new garden in memory of his grandmother.
