Along with their neighbours in the pretty Hertfordshire village of Kimpton, Clifford Harland and his wife Claire could rely on one sure sign that dusk was settling over their neighbourhood.
In its place will be smart new ‘eco’ housing in the form of a terrace of two-bedroom homes, alongside five more ‘luxury’ detached homes further back. In recent years however the property has lain empty and the Grint clan have found themselves on a collision course with locals courtesy of their attempts to transform the estate — which lies on protected greenbelt land and is in a conservation area — into an ‘eco-village’ complete with 15 new homes, among them five detached houses and four terraced properties.
For Davina, it is ‘an unsustainable development that will destroy the conservation area and much of what the developers are saying doesn’t quite ring true’. The eldest of five, flame-haired Rupert was raised in Hertfordshire, and was just 11 when he was cast in the Harry Potter blockbuster film franchise in 2001, the start of a lucrative career which today means his net worth is an estimated £39million — boosted by the input of his business-minded father, who over the years has built up his own lucrative business as a Formula 1 memorabilia dealer.
Whether or not the purchase of Kimpton Grange was also intended as an investment can only be speculated upon. Either way, Land Registry records show that in September 2009 — a month after his 19th birthday — Grint bought the estate for £5.4 million. Then came Covid, and, for Grint junior, new fatherhood following the birth of his now four-year-old daughter Wednesday with partner Georgia Groome in May 2020.Redevelopment plans have been greeted with widespread dismay, not just from villagers but the local wildlife trust and the flood authority. The application was subsequently withdrawn, and replaced five months later by fresh plans to convert an already existing barn on the property into six three-bedroom dwellings including creation of new access and footpath link to Kimpton. The number was subsequently reduced to three, and the plans approved.
Kimpton residents warned of the adverse effects on traffic through the narrow village high street, too, with one reporting that she has witnessed two cars being damaged outside her home in recent years.
