Inside Sam Quek’s huge jungle christening: ‘It was like a second wedding’

When guests arrived at the four-in-one celebration thrown by Sam Quek for her two children, they might have assumed the jungle theme was a nod to her 2016 stint on I’m a Celebrity.

“Molly and Zac absolutely loved it - even though we struggled to get a model of Zac’s favourite animal - a lion - so we made do with a couple of zebras instead!” she laughed. “We had a really tough back end to last year. We lost Sam’s gran, we’d already lost her aunt and one of my close work colleagues and then we lost our dog too. Work was difficult.

With a bouncy castle for smaller guests and multiple screens brought in for adults interested in watching a critical football game Sam, who was awarded an MBE in 2017, admitted that she was thrilled about what they achieved. All this while juggling pregnancy and motherhood - Sam gave birth twice in the space of 21 months and both were c-sections.

“For me one of the biggest things is that I am so much more in touch with my emotions,” she revealed. “Life is very, very busy and every day is different and I love that but I used to feel very guilty about going to work - is there enough food in the ‘fridge, are the clothes clean and the washing done?“Plus, I enjoy work, I love my career and I embrace the busyness - we could have nannies but I like being a hands-on mum.”

“You go out for coffee and it’s one on one and you either click or you don’t. Or you’re getting on fine and then before you know it the other person is asking for Liverpool FC tickets!” “She loves swimming and has good balance. She comes to watch me play hockey and was chasing as ball around with a hair brush saying ‘look at me mummy, I am playing hockey!’”

“We are getting to a point where they are more independent so I just want to take a breath. I enjoy a career but I want to be a successful mum and presenter. You can do both but it is harder when you're a mum. I don’t want to miss those important moments with my kids - and I made sacrifices to do that.”And, while being a mum is her priority, Sam is clearly relishing kicking off a career refresh with plenty of plans in the pipeline, revealing we will see her back on our screens this year.
