Ineos dreaming of Man Utd succession plan but they need luck to make it reality

If you were to hand Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford a blank sheet of paper and ask them to draw up their perfect Manchester United plan, you would get some intriguing answers.

But if Ratcliffe and Brailsford could pick any manager they wanted right now, then the odds are that they would opt for Gareth Southgate. They admire him, he has a long-standing relationship with incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth and his work in developing a new culture around the England national team is considered relevant to what Ineos want at United.

Neither did Ten Hag present a case that was impossible to ignore to stay on. As good as the FA Cup final was, the league season raised concerns that are difficult to overlook. It's approaching the time when they need to stick or twist. The ideal solution for Ineos might be to stick with Ten Hag, to offer him the backing to continue and hope that the FA Cup final was a sign of brighter days ahead rather than a golden outlier. That might also allow them to consider Southgate at a more convenient time.
