A councillor took a hedge trimmer down to a public footpath that had become 'impassable'

A councillor took a hedge trimmer down to a public footpath that had become "impassable" because of overgrown nettles to clear the area himself. Ben Brown, the Conservative representative for the West Bank ward on Mansfield District Council, initially told the authority about the state of the path as he thought it was their responsibility.

The footpath runs from Pheasant Hill to Dunsil Road, behind the Queen Elizabeth's Academy. Councillor Brown says he was told by the council that the pathway was in fact the responsibility of the Queen Elizabeth's Endowed School Trust. He said: "I did get in touch with Queen Elizabeth's about it and asked if they could get someone down there to sort it. I was first contacted about the issue by a lady that lives on the road that backs on to the footpath."She is on a mobility scooter and she was complaining that she couldn't get through because of all the nettles and weeds. I had quite a few parents getting in touch with me as well, who were saying that their children at another nearby school use that footpath.

Councillor Brown says that despite emailing the Trust responsible for the pathway, he did not receive a reply from them. He therefore went down to the path himself on Saturday to clear the nettles and weeds himself. He said: "I just thought if you want a job doing, it's sometimes better to do it yourself. I've probably shot myself in the foot now that I've done it once, because obviously it will all grow back again at some point." The Queen Elizabeth's Academy was contacted for further comment.
