“What the Government has done is immoral… it’s made me feel worthless.” This is what Angela Madden, chair and finance director of the Waspi movement, tellsThe campaigner, 70, is still fighting for herself and the 3.8 million women born in the 50s who did not receive their state pension until the age of 66 when thewas implemented in 2010.
Throughout her working life, Angela, thought the state pension would be there for her when the time came. When she first started working in the seventies, it wasn’t common for women to be part of occupational pension schemes. Over the next six years, Angela tried to get back into the workplace, but to no avail. “It was really impossible,” she said. “I was extremely lucky that the small occupational pension I had with the Post Office was owned by the Government at the time, so the pension was based on the Civil Service scheme.
“It makes me feel kind of worthless. The Government are now doing lots for women – back in my day if you took maternity leave they gave your job to someone else. But what have the government done for my generation? Morally, its wrong to pile a six year state pension delay on an entire cohort of women. Its incredulous.”Angela, who plays a pivotal role in the Waspi campaign, says the group’s main objective is to achieve “some sort of compensation for women.
