Immigration salary threshold should drop by £4,400, says committee

The committee criticised the UK's current complex immigration system where EU workers can come in without a job offer or specific skill under freedom of movement rules, while people from the rest of the world must seek one of many different visas.

But the committee believed the threshold stopped the undercutting of the labour market, ensured migrants made a net positive contribution to the public finances, and made sure migration policy supported the"ambition to make the UK a high wage, high skill, high productivity economy". The prime minister said it would be inspired by schemes like the one in Australia, where applicants are assigned points based on a number of professional and personal characteristics, with higher points awarded for more desirable traits - from the amount of time they have worked in a skilled sector through to their proficiency in the English language.

Committee is probably overpaid , and come up with this?! Pay teachers etc more and get more people interested in training for these positions. Why lower the cap and bring in more people we can’t house ?

Absolutely NOT! Currently with a threshold of 30K,we still have far too many non EU immigrants. The net immigration numbers should be brought down to about 100K patel4witham

The mistery of Brexit

If the salary goes down, the prices of rent, food, fees (university, council tax, BBC) will go down as well, No?

What is the figure for New Zealand for example? £25,000

Immigration has to come down drastically if the Tories want my vote come the next election. Population expansion in UK has cause a housing crisis, pushed down wages and puts pressure on schools and hospitals and has devided our nation.

That should do it 🤣🤣🤣

I’m french. Moved to UK in 94 aged 21 & no qualifications. Went to university (2.1 hons) & got first job for £11k a year. Fast forward 26 years I earn over £60k have never ever used the benefit system & contributed god knows how much in tax. I am not a drain to the Uk.

Statistically immigrants are relative young, use less welfare, NHS and other resources and work harder and pay taxes. They contribute more to the UK society than ordinal British.

Should be increased imo

This will cost jobs to UK workers in sectors such as IT. Needs better thinking.

The Conservative government have already made their mind up regarding immigration

£30k is superseded by higher salary threshold under SOC code, thus this lowering it could be a pointless exercise.

Most early career researchers and postdocs aren’t even on 30k!?!?!? Lower it by 15k more like.

Teaching, NHS etc should be exempt. Keep barriers up for the endless unskilled labour of which we have plenty.

What rules are there on self employment ? You know like Big Issue sellers , car washers , etc ? patel4witham BorisJohnson

So it turns out we need immigrants!

Like we need more people. How's about sorting the housing crisis first.

Wrong.

No

If there's a £25600 job going, get one of the long term unemployed to apply for it. At £25000 pa it isn't going to be to highly skilled.

Any one else see how this would be totally unfair.?

Hell no!

Seriously 4400 . The committee is phoning that one in since the international dialing code of the UK is what? Where's the other 44 ? Hmmm the irony of that one.
