The Italians are not idiots as you imply. You have over looked the fact that Italy has not privatised except for piddling little Alitalia and consequently has a huge amount of state owned assets to offset the deficit - the Govt runs a CA surplus which is the 3rd largest in the EU

I have lived between Italy and the UK since 1980, the damage done to the Italian economy by the €uro imbalance in exchange is astronomical, the quotas imposed by Brussels has ruined the Southern Italian agriculture, they’ll go next.
