IF review: This unfunny Ryan Reynolds comedy tries to be Toy Story

IF stands for imaginary friend, but it is also meant to be suggestive of other “what ifs” in your life. The film is predicated on the idea that we all had an imaginary friend growing up, a best pal whose friendship and support we’ve inadvertently forgotten is living in a Brooklyn walk-up with her grandma when she catches sight of a giant furry purple creature called, obtusely, Blue

Cue a montage of supposedly hilariously miscellaneous creatures hoping for Bea’s attention: Blossom, the tight-lipped humanoid butterfly ; Ice, a talking glass of water ; an affable unicorn ; an octopus ; and a spaceman – all having a whale of a time at an abandoned theme park in Coney Island. The voices of Matt Damon, Louis Gossett Jr, Maya Rudolph, Jon Stewart, Amy Schumer and Sam Rockwell all pop up too.
