The city is one step closer to being ossified under layers of tourist ash

A queue to visit the Rialto Bridge. ‘For a city already teetering dangerously close to historical curiosity, charging entry seems like the final nail in the coffin’

Why aren’t Venetians rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of being able to pop to the corner shop without having to shove hordes of gawping Brits out of the way? Their argument goes to the heart of what Venice is. For a city that’s already teetering dangerously close to “historical curiosity”, charging entry seems like the final nail in the coffin – a concession to the idea of it as a huge, floating theme park, rather than a thriving entity in its own right. As campaigner Marina Rodino told AFP: “ is not a museum. It is not Pompeii.”And for most visitors, €5 isn’t much of a deterrent when just walking around can quickly become ruinously expensive anyway.
