Money Box
"I cleaned the tables, set up the tables, swept the floor, took people to their seats, pretty much everything you'd expect of a waitress, took a few payments on the card machine."Even if the trial was unsuccessful and the restaurant didn't want to give Ellen any more shifts she argues they should have at least paid her for the work she did do.
Fionasstalker some of these replies might be of interest
No Slavery!
Welcome to most of the worlds workers!
Tough shit, she should have done a apprentiship when you got paid nothing out you might get some cash if there was loads of scrap talk about snow flake generation
Someone missing 5 hours of pay is a news story?
I worked for 6 months for free just to get a good reference when I moved from Scotland to Northern Ireland. As it’s who you know and not what you know over here.
ada_mccarry Really appreciate the people who are supporting me and this petition. I know some people don’t agree or think I should have “worked harder” or it’s “good experience” but I do have two years of restaurant experience and the point is that they shouldn’t be able to exploit others
Seen this MANY times, businesses offer trail shifts every Fri & Sat eve (7-8 hours long on the business nights of the week) strangely no-one is ever given the job! HMRC’s NMW team are aware of this practice and fine the employer & also get the arrears to the individuals.
Perhaps she should have worked harder and got the job..... welcome to the real world little princess.... you will soon be doing lots of hours unpaid👍👍👍
Trial periods still working hours. I had a trial at a restaurant for '4 hours' but I wasnt allowed to go home until close cause they were busy. I worked my butt off that shift and despite knowing it was unpaid I couldn't help but think what a easy legal scam for employers to use!
And this.... is what we pay the BBC for Ffs.
It's all about complaining 😂😂😂😂
BORIS AND HIS FAILURES PROMIST TO STOP SLAVE LABOUR, JUST ANOTHER FAILURE!!
Some positions have long selection events with tests etc etc and its right not paid. But at face value this story is loophole exploitation for free work. It would be good to know business owner perspective? and if position was filled to complete story?
I have worked 50 year and still have nothing; so ponder working for nothing? If you have more people than jobs you will need to get use to it. Life's a bitch; stay safe maybe thing will change.
This is a terrible practice & all too common in the catering industry. I knew of one busy bar/restaurant that did this every last Friday of the month just to keep staff wages down. 2-4 waiting staff were always on a 6-hour trial run! Unpaid work should be outlawed.
Oh my god that's awful. A whole 5 hours. She had to put her phone away for 300 minutes!! My heart bleeds. Something should be done about this outrage. I suggest you get a grip!
My daughter did a few of those but didn’t whinge just learnt her lesson
apart from the moral aspect of this what about insurance if the work in a place but not employed, surely they are in a dangerous place and not an employee.
Why didn’t you interview immigrants from Europe and elsewhere who ‘don't have that luxury and can't afford to work for free’?
I did the same thing for (I’m assuming) the same restaurant chain way back!
Usual negative reporting from BBCnews - a balanced report would add a positive story too. I’m sure it’s not all bad news.
I am self employed and many days work for nothing... but I don’t winge about it! 🤷♂️
It has always happened. But if a trial is advertised as unpaid why complain when you are not paid?
I would also add perhaps the businesses need to upgrade the folks doing initial interview. Most folks capable of interviewing a potential employee would and could decide from that.Problem is most folks interviewing are not very good at it and that includes some business owners
Don't agree with so called unpaid trials . I engage a person I pay them for their time. The businesses that don't are just, well you just know the type .Like the old days of yts young were taken on for a yr or two on slave wages very ,very few employers gave Ft job after.
She agreed to it under those terms, I agree though if you work you get paid!
Sorry but this is outrageous and needs to be stopped. You want staff, you pay them. End of.
You consented.
Would she have been paid for those hours if she had been given the job?
Welcome to the real world.
Good luck with your future job prospects , barring employment in the Labour party (oxymoron) or a Trade Union.
She knew this before starting then kicks off because they didn't want her.
Did you try working a full 7.5 hours + everyday, like the rest of us?
defundTheBBC - whatever the story is on bbcnews there is only ever one side to it these days - in a poll yesterday only 13% of Britons put BBCnews as their preferred news channel (ITV came top).
Unpaid work should be a maximum of 1hr
Be better just naming and shaming the restaurant the tight ******s
A company tried it on with me, they said that as I was getting jobseekers allowance of was already being paid. My second word to them was OFF
Any company not paying workers are simply dipping into modern day slavery
Sadly this is endemic -
Anything over 4 hours on a trail shift must be paid by law. I a work in the catering industry as a chef, most of us will do full trail shifts up to 12 hours for free to get the job. I agree most places do this to get free cover for the day and is wrong
The employment rules in this country are disgrace.
Because 'choice' was beyond her? E: 'Can you work for nothing for 5 hours, if you're any good, could be a contract at the end?' G: 'Yeah, sure!' 5 hrs later - G: 'Where's my money?' E: 'Did you not understand the terms?' G: 'Where's my contract?' E: 'Take a stuffing guess!'
Same thing happened to my son at our village pub He was shocked as was I to discover he wouldn’t be paid He went on to work for a much nicer pub That told him to forget everything he was told at the other pub
Its called an 'unpaid trial shift' for a reason & why didn't she get offered the job?
Really
Sounds familiar, not Pret A Manger by any chance ? Also happened to my daughter, who has had various jobs during her uni years and never had to work for nothing. They didn’t even have the decency to tell her she was unsuccessful...
I've experienced this at least twice. Needless to say I felt no loyalty to my employers when they chose not to add the trial shift to my first paycheck.
My son worked 10 hour days for 2 weeks for free. No option but secured the job in the end thankfully
In 2013 i worked for a trial day of 8 h in a flowers shop in Chiswick. I had a break of 20 minute. The owner didn’t pay me, his just said.... In Uk 🇬🇧 the trial day, work like this!!! chiswick flowershop betteridontsaythename
I wonder how much a 1 star review on reviews sites costs them.
Amazes me how much young people complain about. If you object to giving up a few hours of your time for a trial don't do it. Hope she didn't break a sweat!
“Slave Labour” in all but name.
Where she worked should be boycotted by all. Disgusting, if they did this to worker they will not treat you any better.
Standards are slipping. If Britain's not careful you'll join the US and become a 3rd world country.
Whilst I get the point, why didn’t she get the job? That’s the key question here. This is one sided and no input from the employer for comment, please can we have also the comments from the employer to form a rounded opinion?
This happened to a couple of people I know at a local cafe too.
Dear me, she must have been rubbish if my very shy 17 year old, his autistic friend and his Italian friend all got jobs within weeks at one of our local chain pubs as waiters.
Try unemployment. You do 40hr week for nearly £70.
Her texting the BBC her experience during the 300 minute unpaid work trial.
Aww diddums....were you forced to work? No. Did you know you were not getting paid? Yes. Suck it up dear😂
If there the conditions of employment nothing you can do.
She is REALLY gonna hate her life until she retires lol!
You had 5 hours of real life work experience. Most people work for money. Not many people work to learn. Obviously you have taken nothing from this and simply wanted money, not to learn anything.
My 15 year son was asked to work on a bank holiday for free as this was ‘training’. Needless to say we said no way
EeePee13 this might be of interest to you
That is pretty much how it works, no surprise there. Last time I was looking for a barista job as an experienced barista, I worked at least 40 hours in a month at different coffee shops and restaurants on trial shifts and I never saw a lonely pound of it.
She's kinda pretty, so I almost care.
if an employer doesnt pay an employee after theyve worked for them, the employee should be legally allowed to smack the shit out of them
Name and shame
Companies (everywhere) will always take advantage of employees by bending the rules to their favor, at the detriment of those employees each and every time. This does not surprise me at all. And people will blame her for taking the shift, which is why it continues.
Your Medal is in the post 🏅
Ffs name and shame the restaurant involved so we can start a boycott of these slave drivers
Stuff like that and the minimum wage for under 24 year olds is a disgrace. Legislation needed...🙏🙏
One thing is for sure,if companies could they would no doubt expect employees to work for absolutely nothing, they are really crafty
She shouldn't have had to purchase a uniform for a trial but there is no way that she was 'making the company money' during that 5 hours. Quite the opposite, a trained member of staff was probably tied up babysitting her.
5 hours experience working in a restaurant is 5 hours more than she had before she went in.
End trials Start a national maximum wage
Down with Capitalism!!
hah... good luck with that chickadee.. maybe find a job with no free trial period
Deep recession....
