Jonny had never been interested in getting married, and had always been upfront about that. I, on the other hand, was desperate for it in the beginning. I remember one instance on an empty nighttime ferry in Liguria when he got down on one knee and I snapped a picture and gasped – and he tied his shoe. Seriously.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to have the break-up conversation before I left, or when I got back, but we ended up arguing on New Year’s Eve. I said I needed more than just a companion; he said he wanted less. So I pulled off the plaster and told him it was over. It was entirely selfish. It was mad. Had I really just flown clear across the world entirely alone? What the hell was I thinking? Would I be okay? Was this the stupidest thing I had ever done? Maybe, but I was there for a month so I might as well get used to it.
The first night, I signed up for sunset fishing. I love being on the water and grew up fishing with my grandfather. I was the first one to catch a fish , but the crew was astounded when I took out a book and started to read. There was no reason to keep trying to catch more fish, I had plenty of food for one and it was an excellent book. They would tease me for the rest of the month that every time anyone saw me, it was with my nose in a book.
It’s amazing how quickly you settle into normality somewhere else, especially when you are there for the foreseeable future. It became commonplace to see the massive eel under the water bungalows. When there was a wedding on the island, everyone came together to cheer on the bride and groom as a tree was planted.
