Jeremy Doku has a new position, and with it he could have finally convinced Pep Guardiola where he fits into this Manchester City system.
Doku was involved from the first minute, driving into the box from the left but - all too predictably - running down a blind alley. After an encouraging three goals and six assists from his first 12 outings as a City player, Doku had just one goal from his next 18. When he's not providing the control to outweigh that disappointing return, he's been dropped.
There was still the characteristic wastefulness in front of goal, as well as some good defending and goalkeeping to thwart him, but this was Doku building on a positive substitute appearance at Anfield. When Guardiola wanted control against Liverpool, Doku was one of his substitutions - at the time a seemingly counter-intuitive introduction. But Doku was smart last week and unlucky not to score, perhaps lucky not to concede late penalty too.
These cup games are perfect opportunities for fringe players to show what they have learned on the training pitch. Doku has been injured but also out of form. In the last two games he has finally shown he is capable of playing the tactical and positional roles required of a City winger.
