Norman Philips never wanted to leave his job as a project manager for building projects across the country. He used to thrive on managing employees from all corners of Britain and seeing properties being built from scratch.
But when a car accident landed him in the hospital too, and a cancer diagnosis was found, he could not take the physical and emotional stress of being a primary carer and working anymore. He had no choice but to retire at the age of 57 in 2009 and focus on his wife. Fortunately, he made a full recovery from his cancer. His pension, a final salary plan, pays him £1,600 a month on top of the state pension.
He once borrowed money against their home to pay for Ros’ care. It became a nightmare when he needed to remortgage. It has become harder for Norman to take his wife, Ros, on holiday, but they enjoy spending time together in their hometown Although money is tighter than he would like, Norman is proud of being debt-free. He said he has always had an eye for budgeting, regularly tracking spending in his notebook. “I work on our budget almost every day,” he said.
