Katie Glass thought running her countryside cottage off wood would be the rural dream but it's causing her nothing but problems
And given I couldn’t afford to install solar panels, a wood-burner seemed more sustainable than the ancient oil boiler the house had when I moved in. I also hoped, with electricity bills sky-rocketing, that it would save me some cash. The first problem was finding wood. In my fantasy I’d hiked to the forest with a chainsaw but in reality I was nervous about it. When it came to actually doing it, I was concerned, especially as people began sharing horror stories about chainsaw accidents, including someone hit in the head by a chainsaw bouncing off a log.
After that, the task of keeping the fire burning becomes a full-time job. If you pop to the shops, or God forbid go away, you come home to find the whole cottage freezing and have to start again, lighting the stove and waiting hours for it to warm up to temperature. I guess there’s a reason people stopped living like this after the 19th century.is equally problematic. If I have to be out the door by 8am, it’d mean getting up at 6am to light the fire and wait for the water to warm up.
