'I have extreme ostrich tendencies combined with a fear of debt so I spent 12 years dragging my feet', says Lucy Dunn
But rather than pointing a finger at other people, maybe it’s time to take a long hard look at myself – because compared to them, I’m the Queen of Procrastination, putting off building my own house extension for 12 long years. When the puddles turned into a lake, I knew I had to give up the fight. Fast forward two years, I have no regrets. We now have four double bedrooms, a utility room and a large sitting-room-diner with a farmhouse table that seats eight so I can finally host the big dinners I’d always wanted. There’s plenty of room for everyone, my eldest no longer has to sleep on a single bed with his feet dangling off the end and even the dog gets a comfy nook.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret the extension, but I do regret the procrastination. Why didn’t we just bite the bullet and get it done before? We’ve missed years of enjoying it as a family, years of big family lunches, years of the kids filling the house with friends for sleepovers, and when I think about it, there is a definite tinge of remorse and annoyance with myself for not being braver about splashing the cash.
