Douglas Ross stood by his refusal to say whether he voted for Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership campaign The leader of the Scottish Conservatives has described the economic fallout caused by the mini-Budget as an “absolutely huge concern”, saying he is worried about his own mortgage.
Douglas Ross said he expected Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng to make an urgent statement on the situation as soon as Westminster returns from recess, stressing: “There has to be a reaction”., he said he still had full confidence in both the Chancellor and the Prime Minister. Speaking to reporters at Holyrood, Mr Ross was asked if he was worried that people across the country will be left worse off as a result of the mini-Budget and the market reaction.
“It’s an absolutely huge concern,” he replied. “I’m a mortgage payer like the vast majority of people here in Scotland and across the UK, and that’s a considerable concern. “I think it is right that in terms of tax reduction, we see as many people from lower earners through the tax system paying less tax, so they have more of their own money to spend in the local economy supporting local businesses – but that is being offset at the moment by the increasing interest charges, and people are struggling. We’ve got to do everything we can to support them.”
