Wilko was founded in Leicester by James Kensey Wilkinson in 1930, and currently remains in control of the family
When each of us hears news break, our individual reactions vary. There is news that fills us with total devastation, and that which entirely passes us by. The common factor in our reaction tends to be what actually impacts us, as individuals and communities, most. But there’s another common category: I’ll call it the total heart-sinker. It’s not news to shed real tears over, and we know even at the time that we’ll get over it, but in the immediate aftermath, we feel, for want of a better synonym, gutted. That’s how I’d categorise hearing yesterday that. Administrators have been called in to decide the future of around 12,000 jobs and hundreds of bricks and mortar stores across the country.
I’m old enough to remember when Wilko was actually Wilkinsons, and uncool enough to still actually call it that, despite the rebrand embracing its nickname in 2012. Growing up in Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, we had the choice of Wilkinsons and Woolworths for our hand wash, pick and mix and baking tin needs, both in the same area of our indoor shopping centre Frenchgate.
In addition to reasonable pricing, you’re also looking at a genuinely useful variety of items, making it incredibly hard to leave without buying at least a small basket’s worth. As such, I stop by at least once a week. In the last few months, I’ve bought paint for our garden fences, sticker packs for our daughter, sofa cushions and travel mugs; I’ve used the photo booth for passport photos and hired a carpet cleaner.
