Liz O'Riordan was fleeced of £740 by an online scammer pretending to sell a Peloton bike. She tells how to avoid falling into the same trap
It all started when a couple of friends told me how much they loved their Peloton exercise bikes. I’d been thinking about getting one for a while but was. Then a friend said she bought hers secondhand onI logged onto Facebook and started searching near me. And there it was. A Peloton Plus with all the accessories for £800 . It had only been used 20 times, said the listing. And the icing on the cake was that the seller’s husband owned a haulage company, and they would deliver it for free.
Off I dutifully went to fetch another one. It was only then that I asked how much I was paying. I wanted to check that I was getting the bike for £750. He said it was going through his haulage business and was taking £741. It was something to do with tax. At the time this all seemed completely logical to me.Later that afternoon I got a notification from the original credit card company querying transactions on my account. I thought I recognised them all but the.
The bike was meant to come the next day. I sent a text to check that the bike was being delivered but never had a reply. Only then did I start to get a sick feeling in my stomach. I checked the second card app to see who I’d actually paid money to. My card had been used to withdraw travel money from a Marks and Spencer’s branch in Chester, miles away from where I live. They’d somehow been able to collect it without having my ID.
