It sounds like the fantasy career plan of a doll-loving child with a big imagination, Barbie's stylist. But before you break the news to your little one that this isn't actually a job, think again - because Barbie has her own Instagram account, and every fashion influencer needs a good wardrobe.
Meet Barbie’s official stylist The person behind these Insta-perfect looks is Barbie’s official stylist Rachel Ritter. OK! headed to California to see her at work. Leaving the rain behind in London we were picked up fresh from our flight in a bright pink Barbie bus. After a short drive we stopped outside a one-storey Mattel building surrounded by palm trees, where Rachel was waiting to greet us.
She said: "Maybe this is just exciting to me but it really gets me." The next section contained thousands of hats. Rachel said: "Some are custom made or, or altered to be specific. But a lot are from product you could buy on shelves.” She explains: “We're always mixing and matching custom, vintage and specialty pieces. I'm pulling from all different kinds of inspiration and sources.”
It’s up to Rachel to decide what Barbie should be wearing, with the styling wardrobe walls covered in inspiration pictures torn from the latest high end fashion magazines.Rachel says: “When I'm putting together wardrobe references or a shot list, I'm looking at Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok. I'm putting together ideas and a mood board and I'm working from there and then it helps us build our shot list.
Another place she finds ideas is the stylish streets of Los Angeles: “I'm out in the world and I'm like, ‘how would this look if they were absolutely tiny and put on Barbie’.” Her aim is “to elevate and yet keep things authentic”, as Rachel explained “we do make products that a doll can't have.” These include real metal accessories, such as hoop earrings.
On Rachel's desk on the day we visit sits an entire drawer of hundreds of tiny hands, all with the fingers in subtly different positions, some fused to better support props. Out of shot sits drawer after drawer of miniature pieces of furniture, ready to style the house for whatever interior shot is needed. If she's not away filming on location it's here that Barbie heads for the day to use stop motion camerawork, to create her videos for Instagram and TikTok.
