After the Sunday Times listed the Ormeau Road among the best places to live in NI, this long time resident shares his humble opinion

I may have been here long enough to remember when Forestside, sorry Lesley Forestside, was Supermac but I’m still an outsider.

But when I walk down that road today, do I see a different place to the road I wandered when a pint was around £2 and I was pulling them in the Errigle as often as I was drinking them? Thirty years have passed by from those days and yes, much has changed. And if the food that tempts you on any road is a barometer of the kind of a neighbourhood you’re in, then The Road is certainly pretty cosmopolitan. There’s La Taqueria if you fancy Mexican and, more recently, Mama Bobo if you’re into Nigerian. Obviously there are any number of chippies and Chinese and of course not one but two great Indians.

For a sit-down dinner Stove and Shed offer both fine food and, to circle back around to that key point, somewhere you can go for dinner, have a few drinks then walk home. It might well be my age, but I feel like the kids in Ferris Bueller for whom going into The City was some huge adventure. I simply can’t be bothered with the organising of taxis and and all the rest of it when I have everything I need at my doorstep.

There is of course the occasional ripple in the pond. ‘This is a mixed area’, some local MLAs say when the flags appear during marching season. But the lads on the cherry-picker come and go, a reminder perhaps that the demographics of the Ormeau Road may be evolving but it is not yet completely detached from its past.

Indeed if you’re one of the ever growing numbers involved in Bredagh GAC you’ll know those weekday treks ‘up the country’ to matches will always see you set off in a southerly direction. The ones at equally popular Rosario, on the other hand, travel more widely.
