When Clare asked to be sterilised, both her GP and a nurse told her there was 'no chance' she’d be approved for NHS funding as a woman under 40. Sarah Graham reports on a reproductive injustice
Sterilisation procedures for both men and women are commissioned by local integrated care boards , as part of NHS contraception services. When I contacted all 42 of England’s ICBs, more than half confirmed that they routinely fund both male and female sterilisation.
“For tubal ligation, on the other hand, you need a general anaesthetic, which requires multiple members of staff and time in theatre, so the cost goes up. And, as with anything where you’re putting someone to sleep, the risk of complications goes up,” Dr Sowemimo says. Even when access isn’t restricted by waiting lists or funding policies, women still come up against sexism, Dr Sowemimo says. She describes hearing about doctors who’ve told women they “might change their mind”, or asked what their partner thinks about their decision. Similar comments came up time and time again during my research for this article.
“Climate change is a big reason for me, as well as the financial cost, and the fact we love travelling and going on long hikes together. I wouldn’t want children to limit the joys we have in life. I have lots of nieces and nephews, who I love spending time with, but I’ve always been much more animal-focused and wanted to rescue lots of dogs. I feel like that’s my calling.”
