'I lost my two-year-old son to cancer at Christmas, having his last days at home meant everything to me'

TOOTHY smiles, infectious giggles and finding joy in the darkest moments, they are the children who moved the toughest man in showbiz to tears.

Their support enabled their son to pass away at home surrounded by his family, making it easier for them to grieve.Elin, 39, says: “It was a Christmas that was unlike anything you could ever imagine, but Axel was at home with us and that meant everything.”“We had a year and a half with Axel after he was diagnosed, filled with some of the best and worst times of our lives,” explains Elin.

The family, including daughter Martha, five, first received respite care from the charity’s hospice in Guildford, in the summer of 2017. Elin says: “No-one really wants to talk about children who have died but I love to talk about our son. The hospice did so much for us.”She adds: “When your child has a cancer diagnosis you’re constantly living in combat mode trying to protect him. A sneeze or a cough feels like a deliberate attempt on his life.
