If two years in Westminster taught me anything, it’s that the privileged few still decide the future of Britain’s working class, says former Labour MP Laura Smith

What a difference a year makes. At the end of 2018 I had just won an MP of the Year award – by New Year’s Eve 2019, I had lost a job that I loved. A week to pack up the parliamentary office, up to two months to wind up the constituency office, and then the absolute worst part: making my amazing staff redundant.

I get tired of this attitude that only working class people suffer when they lose their jobs. It’s the same for many middle class people to like me. The mortgage and council tax have to be paid as do fuel bills. We don’t have wealthy parents to rely on either.

You did not loose your job Laura. You lost your MP seat. I figger the Tories took it from you. No? I guess UK MPs don't get a MP discharge fee, which allows them to have more time to find another type of job. Bad luck for poor MPs. Relatively speaking.
